Letter to my 17 year old self

Dear 17 year old Shereen,

Congratulations! You have accomplished a very important milestone in your life. I wish you could be more happy and proud of yourself right now. And that you were less insecure about the future and more excited about the unknown. Anyway, there are a few things I wish I could tell you so here it goes.

First of all, don’t worry be happy:), seriously!! I know you would probably think whatever and roll your eyes but try it, you can always start worrying again. God has many blessings and many trials for your life in store. You don’t know Him yet , at least maybe not to the extent you will later in your life, but trust me He loves you and has an amazing plan for you.

I know that you are also excited, yet terrified about starting at University and finally starting to follow your big dream: becoming a doctor. I mean, since you were 7 you had this dream and now its finally going to become reality! You feel like you can finally make the world a little better by helping people get better. I guess some things never change.

But you must know, dear Shereen, that despite this great talent of yours of being empathetic and helpful to others can sometimes be a pitfall. Other people can easily take you for granted and will even use these amazing traits against you. The wonderful thing is that some people will love and adore you for it. Its these people who you must focus on and try to attract and recognize. Not an easy task, but surely one of the most important things you will ever have to do.

Anyway, i digress…. Uni will be one of the most impressive times of your life. You will laugh a lot, cry a lot and learn the most. The latter does not only refer to all the wondrous lessons of the body and mind of a human being, but to the most important person in your life: yourself. WHAT?? you might think, that sounds totally arrogant and goes against all my believe systems programmed from childhood. And that’s also a very good trait of yours: always being considerate of other people’s feelings and needs. That’s also going to give you the need to please. Or as your ‘friend’ Oprah Winfrey would say: the disease to please.

You see, like everything in life you need balance. So with all the amazing things there will also be sad and difficult periods for you ahead. But I’m here to tell you that YOU WILL SURVIVE. I mean, you can trust me because I’m 17 years older now and THANKFUL for each and every beautiful and the most difficult experiences that life has given me. Studying medicine will always have a special place in your heart as you were very blessed to do this, as with your study of Health sciences. However, as life goes on, you will discover your passion and preferences have changed over the years.

Its time for a new chapter in your life: sharing your experiences, knowledge and passion for health, make-up, fashion and lifestyle with other people. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. So live your life to the fullest with lots of love and laughter.
